The Power of Play

Do you know that play can light up the brain, calm the nervous system, and improve relationships? Research over the past two decades shows that play can help improve one's social, emotional, and intellectual capacities. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Drs. Stanley Greenspan and Serena Weider, and influenced by some of the nation’s leading child psychologists and neurologists, I’ve made play the trademark of my career.

Clayton Johnson, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #107668, is a D.I.R.®/Floortime™ Certified, Developmental Play Therapist & Psychotherapist based in Los Angeles, CA. He also plays drums in a rock band, but that’s no way to make a living:)

“As a father of two daughters, I have a deep understanding of how challenging and rewarding raising a family can be. The foundation of a solid family rests upon warm, nurturing, compassionate, empathetic, patient, and supportive relationships. Through careful attention to play, we create opportunities for these traits to flourish, which can result in a more healthy and more functional family unit.”

“Play itself is important but learning how to play is what matters most. For most of us, play comes easy. We’re hard-wired to run and jump and twist and shout. But for individuals with biological, neurological, physiological, or environmental challenges, play can be difficult to initiate, execute, and sustain.”

“I believe that the relationship and safety established with others through play sets the foundation for successful therapeutic outcomes. When the relationship feels secure and a feeling of safety is embedded, that’s when real change can happen.”
